DDD MUC Meetup: Crafting Great APIs with Domain-Driven Design
On January 14, 2026, I had the pleasure of speaking at the DDD MUC Meetup in Munich, hosted by codecentric AG. It was a fantastic evening with around 40 attendees passionate about Domain-Driven Design.
Our Talk: Crafting Great APIs with DDD
Together with Annegret Junker from codecentric, we presented our approach to designing APIs using Domain-Driven Design principles. We demonstrated how methods like Domain Storytelling and Event Storming can help business and IT collaborate to create APIs that are not only technically sound but also truly reflect business understanding.
The key questions we addressed:
- How do you craft great APIs that are self-explanatory and straightforward to use?
- How can they cover business needs effectively?
- How can APIs be designed without using YAML in Workshops?
We showed practical examples from our book “Crafting Great APIs with Domain-Driven Design” and discussed how these collaborative workshops lead to better API designs that remain maintainable over time.
Industrial AI Through the DDD Lens
The evening also featured an excellent talk by Nikita Golovko from Siemens on “Industrial AI Through the DDD Lens.” Nikita demonstrated how Domain-Driven Design principles can be effectively applied to AI applications on the factory floor, showing how to bridge complex industrial domains with AI technology while maintaining clean architectures. It was fascinating to see DDD applied in such a concrete industrial context.
A Great Community Evening
What made the evening special was the engaged audience and the lively discussions that followed both talks. The DDD MUC community brought together software architects, developers, AI/ML practitioners, and API designers - all eager to exchange ideas and experiences. The conversations continued well beyond the formal presentations, showing the genuine interest in applying DDD principles across different domains.
