Talk: How to Design AsyncAPIs in Workshops - The API Product Canvas

Abstract

The API Product Canvas is a powerful collaborative tool for designing APIs that meet both business and technical requirements. This workshop, co-presented with Annegret Junker from Codecentric, demonstrates how to apply the API Product Canvas methodology specifically to AsyncAPI design.

As APIs become critical products that power AI connectivity, scalability, and value delivery, having a structured approach to API design is essential. This workshop provides participants with practical techniques for running collaborative API design sessions that bring together diverse stakeholders - from business leaders to developers - ensuring that AsyncAPIs are designed with clear purpose, well-defined boundaries, and consideration for all consumers.

The session explores how the API Product Canvas helps teams think through the complete lifecycle of an AsyncAPI, from identifying consumers and use cases to defining events, schemas, and quality attributes. Participants learn how to facilitate productive design workshops that result in AsyncAPIs that are both technically sound and aligned with business objectives.

API Product Canvas The API Product Canvas - A collaborative tool for designing both synchronous and asynchronous APIs

Key Takeaways

  • Collaboration is the key: The best APIs come from collaboration between business and IT - the API Product Canvas facilitates this crucial cross-functional dialogue

  • Visual modeling works better in cross-functional teams: Complex API designs become clearer when visualized on a canvas, making technical concepts accessible to all stakeholders

  • Short profile of a bounded context: The combination of API Product Canvas and Visual Glossary provides a complete, concise overview of a bounded context’s API surface

  • Single approach for sync and async: The API Product Canvas handles both synchronous REST APIs and asynchronous event-driven architectures in one unified framework
